The free restroom cleaning checklist: six numbered boxes of steps with checkboxes, from putting on gloves to writing the time on the cleaning log

What's on the checklist

Six groups, in the order the work gets done. Clean top to bottom, wet to dry, and from the far side of the room out to the door.

  1. Before you start

    • Put on gloves.
    • Knock, and make sure no one is inside.
    • Put a wet floor sign at the door.
    • Look for damage or heavy mess that needs extra time.
  2. Toilets and touch points

    • Pick up anything in or around the toilets and urinals.
    • Flush to make sure each toilet is clear and working.
    • Spray disinfectant on toilets, urinals, sinks, dispensers and door handles. Leave it wet for the time on the label.
    • Put bowl cleaner in each bowl, starting at the rim.
  3. Dust, restock and empty

    • Dust above the floor, from the top down.
    • Sweep from the far corner to the door.
    • Refill the toilet paper, paper towels and soap.
    • Empty the trash and sanitary bins, and put in new liners.
  4. Walls, fixtures and glass

    • Wipe marks off the walls and stalls.
    • Dry and polish the metal fixtures.
    • Clean the mirrors and glass.
    • Clean the floor drain, if there is one.
  5. Finish

    • Wipe each sprayed surface, from the top down.
    • Mop the floor.
    • Report any repairs or damage.
    • Take the wet floor sign away once the floor is dry.
  6. After each cleaning

    • Clean your tools and put everything away.
    • Write the time and your initials on the cleaning log.

How often to clean a restroom

There's no single schedule. It depends on how much traffic your restroom gets.

  • At least once a day.
  • As often as every hour when traffic calls for it.
  • Right after your busiest times, if you can't clean that often.
  • Check it often enough that supplies never run out.

A checklist says what to clean. Visits since the last cleaning say when.

Let the sign hand out the code. Customers scan the sign by your restroom and get the door code on their phone. Each code the sign hands out counts as a visit, so you can clean it after it's been busy.

  • When to clean

On paper: A checklist can't show how busy the restroom was between cleanings.

With LooiQ: The dashboard shows the visits since the last cleaning, for every restroom.

  • A record of each cleaning

On paper: A ticked box doesn't show when it was done, or by which staff member.

With LooiQ: Each cleaning is logged with the time and the staff member.

  • Checking in

On paper: Log lines get skipped on busy days.

With LooiQ: Staff check in a cleaning by scanning the sign at the restroom door.
